Spiced Cake Donuts

There’s something about a warm, spiced cake donut that just feels like fall. These fall-spiced baked cake donuts are tender and buttery — without the need for a deep fryer.

Starting with Bakery Bliss Vanilla Cake Mix, a few simple additions transform the mix into a cozy fall treat. Applesauce adds moisture, melted butter gives the donuts a rich, buttery flavour, and warm spices bring just the right amount of fall flavour.

A simple vanilla glaze finishes them off with just the right amount of sweetness.

Spiced Cake Donuts

Ingredients

Donut Batter:

  • 1/2 package of Bakery Bliss Vanilla Cake Mix
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon Allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cloves
  • 2 tablespoons Butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup Apple Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 1 tablespoon Water

Vanilla Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup Icing Sugar
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons Water
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a donut pan well.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the Vanilla Cake Mix and spices.
  3. Melt the butter and allow to cool slightly before whisking in the egg, applesauce, milk and water.
  4. Add the butter mixture to the cake mix and stir until smooth.
  5. Let the batter rest for 5–10 minutes.
  6. Pipe or spoon the batter into the prepared donut cavities, filling each about ⅔ to ¾ full.
  7. Bake for approximately 10–14 minutes, or until the donuts are set and spring back lightly when touched. Avoid overbaking, as this can make the donuts dry.
  8. Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Make the glaze:

  1. Whisk together the icing sugar and vanilla and 1 tablespoon of water. Continue to add a little water at a time until the glaze reaches a smooth, pourable consistency.
  2. Once the donuts have cooled, dip the tops into the vanilla glaze. Allow the excess glaze to drip off before placing them on a cooling rack or parchment paper.
  3. Let the glaze set before serving.
