Just One Cupcake, Please: How to Make a Single Cupcake with Bakery Bliss

Single Chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream swirl on a pink napkin

Sometimes you just want one cupcake.

Not a dozen. Not a tray. Just a single, warm, fresh-baked cupcake to satisfy that sweet craving without the extra leftovers (or the temptation of eating six in one sitting — we’ve all been there).

That’s where this easy, small-batch baking hack comes in: using just a few tablespoons of our cake mix, you can whip up a perfectly fluffy, bakery-style cupcake in your favorite flavor — chocolate or vanilla — whenever the craving hits.

Why Bake Just One?

There’s something a little magical about baking for yourself — especially when it's quick, easy, and made with ingredients you already have on hand. Whether you need a late-night treat, a mid-afternoon mood booster, or just a way to test out your frosting skills, making a single cupcake is equal parts fun and satisfying.

And the best part? No waste. No commitment. No sharing required.

Small Batch, Big Flavor

Because you're starting with my cake mix — whether it’s rich chocolate or classic vanilla — you’re getting the same quality and flavor you'd expect from a full batch, scaled down for a one-and-done treat. The cake turns out moist, fluffy, and full of flavor, every time.

This is also a great way to test out new frosting combinations or try your hand at decorating without having to bake a whole dozen.

How to Make a Single Cupcake Using Our Cake Mix

All you need is:

  • 2 tablespoons of our chocolate or vanilla cake mix
  • 2 teaspoons of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of neutral oil (like canola or vegetable oil)
  • 2 teaspoons of water (use boiling water if making chocolate!)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Place a cupcake liner in a muffin tin (or lightly grease one cavity if you're skipping the liner).
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the cake mix, milk, oil, and water until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into the cupcake liner.
  5. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Let cool before frosting — or enjoy warm with a scoop of ice cream for an instant dessert win.

Make It Yours

Want to make it even more fun? Try adding:

  • A handful of mini chocolate chips or sprinkles
  • A teaspoon of peanut butter or Nutella in the center before baking
  • A quick glaze or microwave ganache drizzle instead of frosting

Whether you go full-on frosted or keep it simple, this single cupcake is all about treating yourself.

The Perfect Treat, Anytime

Life’s too short to wait for a special occasion to enjoy a cupcake. With just a few spoonfuls of mix and a couple pantry staples, you can make your day a little sweeter — no mixer, no mess, and no leftovers.
